Ecuador asks for delay of new Canal tolls

Some users of the Panama Canal, such as Ecuador, believe that a new toll increase could affect their structural competitiveness.

Jaime Albuja, coordinator of employment and competitiveness of Ecuador requested the Canal authorities to consider the possibility of delaying the adjustment.

The representative of the Ecuadorian public and private sectors asked the Panamanian authorities not to enforce the increase until at least 2014.

Q1 shows growth in cargo movement

The movement of 20ft container equivalents (TEUs) increased by 21% during the first quarter of 2012, according to preliminary figures from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).
