When the Canal route was opened in 1914, Colón was divided into Costa Arriba and Costa Abajo, while afterwards a small bridge was opened over the Gatun locks, which only worked when no ship crossed and vehicles had to wait on both banks.

The imposing structure cost $590.6 million. Its length is 4,605 meters and has four lanes. It holds the world record as a cable-stayed concrete bridge, four lanes, with the longest lights (530 meters). Its cable-stayed section is over one kilometer long. Construction began in May 2013 and was in charge of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). In addition to promoting local tourism activity, the work benefits more than 40,000 inhabitants of the Costa Abajo, in Colón.

The president of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, recognized the efforts of managers and workers of the canal and the struggle of men like Omar Torrijos, at the inauguration of the third bridge.

“The whole country benefits. Colon benefits”, he said and clarified that “There are 40,000 residents who benefit directly”.

The ceremony was held in the center of the majestic bridge, 75 meters above sea level, amd included the welcome of Jorge Luis Quijano, administrator of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).
