Panama joins seven other countries on the “blacklist”

The new Committee on Fisheries report, published by the European Commission (EC), addresses the failures of Panama and seven other countries that are considered uncooperative when it comes to illegal fishing.

To hit more closely, the EC directly says that Panama is not meeting its obligations in the fight against illegal fishing for ships sailing under its flag.

For the European Commission the existence of vessels IUU (illegal, unregulated and unreported) flying the Panamanian flag following its inclusion in the IUU lists prepared by Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs) is a clear indication of Panama breaching its obligations as a flag State under international law.

Cruise line denies ignoring boat in distress off Panama

Princess Cruises has issued a statement by Alan Buckalew, President and CEO of the line, denying that the “Star Princess” failed to aid a drifting Panamanian fishing boat.

The statement reads, in part: “While this remains a tragic story, we are gratified to have scientific confirmation that Star Princess was never in the vicinity of the adrift boat and that the boat photographed by our passengers was not the adrift Fifty Cent.”
