Of all the countries that have universities and naval schools that prepare merchant navy officers, Panama is the only one that does not have a school-ship where the cadets can do the necessary practice so they meet the requirements demanded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and earn their title as nautical engineers.

In the presence of important maritime industry representatives, delegates, diplomats and senior government officials, the Maritime Inspectorate of Belgium (BMI), certified the UMIP as an International Maritime University for maritime training.
This is an important achievement that makes the UMIP the first training center outside Belgium to be honored by BMI, which will increase the number of Panamanian cadets aboard the European maritime fleet.

The Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and the Panama International Maritime University (UMIP) have joined forces to develop academic programs in the field of civil, maritime and port engineering as the result of a cooperation agreement signed by both.

The Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and the Panama International Maritime University (UMIP) renewed a memorandum of understanding that will allow Panamanian cadets to embark on one of the company´s ships for their sea time.

Some 300 aspiring cadets started in the Orientation Program 2013 of the Panama International Maritime University (UMIP) as part of the admission process that prepares freshmen for the rules of discipline and leadership.
During the program, which lasted two weeks, the candidates participated in sport and discipline, and received introductory lectures and familiarization talks on the maritime industry.
The program also involves applicants in academics that mark their characters for the rest of their lives.
