The first woman president of Brazil, economist Dilma Rousseff, aged 63, promises to uphold and defend the Constitution of her country, obey the law, promote the general good of the Brazilian people, sustain unity, integrity and independence of Brazil, says the text she read in a solemn session of the Senate in the presence of its president, Jose Sarney, who is also its chairman.
The new president received the presidential sash in the Planalto Palace in Brasilia.
The ceremony was attended by heads of State of Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guinea Bissau, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, the Republic of Guinea, Suriname and Venezuela, as well as by the Prince of Asturias, Felipe de Borbon, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Also present were the president of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Mahmoud Abbas, the prime ministers of Portugal, José Socrates, South Korea’s Kim Hwang-sik and of Bulgaria Boyko Borisov. The new Brazilian government will seek to strengthen links with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, and deepen relations with the United States and the European Union (EU), president Rousseff said in her inauguration address.
The president of Brazil is a woman of strong character and authoritarian reputation facing the challenge of governing a country of 190 million people and dealing with the shadow of former president, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva.
The president was born on December 14, 1947 in Belo Horizonte, State capital of Minas Gerais.
Rousseff said “avoiding that which is hard is not my nature, but my role. I solve problems and conflicts without rest. Do not criticize me for being hard, but for being a woman”.
In Panama, we believe that the Brazilian companies that are working in our country have a good future and will help us to develop with steady steps, with projects that are underway such as the capital’s Metro subway construction and extensions of the Coastal Strip and other large companies that will come from Brazil to our nation in 2011.
