The Climate Change Conference to be held at the ATLAPA Convention Center Sheraton Hotel from October1 to 7 is expected to generate $14 million for the Panamanian economy.
An extraordinary credit of $8 million was approved for Panama’s Foreign Ministry to conduct this event according to the ministry.
The event is estimated to cost about $5.7 million, of which the UN will provide $4 million, while the Government will cover the remaining $1.7 million.
Panama will advance the $4 million and the UN Secretariat will then refund it to the Panamanian Government.
A significant amount of these funds will be used to adapt temporary structures at the ATLAPA Convention Center to meet the needs of the UN for salons and offices.
Added to this, the UN Secretariat on Climate Change will have an additional cost of $2 million to cover travel and subsistence, interpretation, security personnel and UN support to developing countries by buying tickets and covering travel expenses.
Other needs are technical and computer equipment with advanced technology for managing conferences in the format that is customary at the UN, broadcast live over the Internet and closed circuit systems.
This type of conference brings with it environmental impacts. For this, the Government will invest in a reforestation project, which will be determined by the National Environmental Authority (ANAM).
Economic benefit will come from an estimated 35 000 overnight hotel occupations, including meals, transport and shopping.
