La Estrella de Panama, the oldest newspaper in the country is in danger of closing permanently, because its owner, Abdul Waked, has been accused by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of running a money laundering operation, in which 68 of his companies including GESE (La Estrella de Panama and El Siglo) were allegedly involved.

The Panama Chamber of Shipping has had a dispute with the Panamanian Food Safety Authority (Autoridad Panameña de Seguridad Alimentaria – AUPSA) since March 23, 2016 after this government entity announced an increase in its tariffs.

The AUPSA inspects transshipment cargo passing through the Panama Canal. Immediately after the announcement, the auxiliary maritime companies complained and AUPSA stopped the measure pending further consultation with those affected.

The National Assembly approved in third debate Bill No 222, that modifies articles of Law 29 of 1992 that adopts a Special Free Port System for Colón City.
