UMIP offers new on line English course

The Panama International Maritime University (UMIP) in its efforts to provide mass access to its academic programs has launched the online course of Basic English for Ordinary Seamen, a free program.

The new course is aimed at all people with little knowledge of English, but who have the desire and need to learn the most effective means of communication in the maritime industry.

This is the second online course offered by the UMIP to the public. The first was the regular seamen virtual course, launched on May 18, 2011.

The Virtual UMIP educational model is part of the academic commitment of this university to bring specialized training in the maritime industry to anyone who wants to be part of this booming sector.

The course includes classroom and distance classes, including online study material, participation in specialized forums for discussion and consultation, via email, about the doubts that may arise regarding the content of the course modules.

Once the student enrolls through the UMIP Virtual Platform: www.umip.ac.pa/virtual, there is full access to the course structured in the following topics: Introduction: International Maritime Organization, Introduction and Presentations (Module I); Questions and Short Answer Information (Module II), Country (Module III), The Ship (Module IV) and Work on Board (Module V).

Through the website: www.umip.ac.pa/virtual, which can be accessed anywhere in the country or the rest of the world, participants need only register as users, and can then interact and find the tools to carry out their respective tasks.

The registrant may take the course over a period of four months, and then can make the corresponding test on the campus of the UMIP in La Boca, Ancon. However, those who prefer a slow course can study longer because there is no limit to it.

Each module must have 20 hours of instruction and practice, which is recommended. When the student has completed the modules and feels confident of managing and understanding the concepts, he or she can take the examination.

In order to take the written test for certification, the student must approach the UMIP and pay a registration fee of $25.00 to $50.00 for nationals and foreigners. The course itself is free of charge, but the cost is for the application of the test and subsequent certification.
