Former Indianapolis Colts safety Sergio Brown has disappeared after his mother, Myrtle Brown, was found dead near her suburban Chicago home over the weekend.
Mother’s Body Discovered in Creek
On Saturday, Maywood police officers searched the area around 73-year-old Myrtle Brown’s home after family members reported being unable to contact Myrtle or her son Sergio. During a second sweep of the area, officers found Myrtle’s body unresponsive near a creek behind her Maywood residence.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Myrtle’s death a homicide resulting from multiple injuries related to an assault.
Maywood Deputy Police Chief Yancy Theodore told reporters the department is investigating Myrtle’s slaying but would not comment on whether Sergio Brown is a suspect. Theodore said the former NFL player remains missing as of Monday morning.
Sergio Brown’s Football Career
Brown played defensive back for the Indianapolis Colts from 2012-2014 after going undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2010. He signed with the New England Patriots as a free agent and spent two seasons in Foxborough before joining the Colts.
Over his seven-year NFL career, Brown also suited up for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills. He recorded 115 total tackles, 2 interceptions and 1 touchdown during his time in the league.
Mother Remembered as “Outstanding Woman”
Neighbors expressed shock over the violent death of Myrtle Brown, who was known as a friendly fixture in the community.
“Myrtle, she was an outstanding woman, and I’m hoping she’s in the right place and she’s with God,” said Carlos Cortez, who lives next door to the Browns. “I never would’ve expected this in a million years.”
